I have always loved working with school aged children. This age is a very special time in a child’s life. It’s a time when kids find their own interests, opinions, and we’re able to work together to not only capture some memories for their parents, but to also give each child their own voice, and capture who they are. Often the elementary and middle school years are often neglected when it comes to having portraits done. I’d like to shine a light on this age group because I feel that so many families document the baby and toddler years, but once a child reaches kindergarten, they only have an annual school headshot or a couple of quick photos done at the same time as the family or a younger sibling’s photo session. When kids get their own shoot, I notice a huge difference in their enthusiasm and confidence. They get to have fun, be the star for a day, they get to be heard and they get to be goofy! This results in authentic portraits that show the child’s spirit.
Having 3 daughters myself, I have always made a point to take a special day for each of my girls. We go through their closets and put together 3 looks, to show off different sides of who they are. I like to pick out something casual, something dressy, and something fun. Accessories make a big difference!
We head out and have a blast doing their own special photo shoot, and finish up with a special treat at the end. Many of these sessions with my girls have resulted in beautiful keepsake albums that we treasure and will become heirloom items for them to pass on to their own families one day. Knowing how much these mean to our family, I want to extend my talents and encourage people to do this for their own kids. It really makes them feel special, is a bonding event between a parent and child, and is amazing for a kid’s self esteem. While I am able to do this with my girls annually, I wouldn’t expect everyone to do that. If you’re able to do it once between the ages of 4-7 the the kid stage, again at age 8-12 for the tween years and once between 13-15 for the teen years, you’ll capture these major stages in a child’s life and give your child a day to remember! I’m always hearing from families about how their child looks through their album frequently, remembering their special day. It’s really an amazing gift.
Before the session, we'll set up a consult to talk about your child and what he or she loves, what type of images YOU love, and will use this as inspiration to personalize the session for your child. Style, color, and their unique interests come into play here. I will guide your child into activities they will enjoy while strategically placing them in beautiful light and just the right angles to make for beautiful photos. I will invite the family/siblings to jump in for a few photos in a child's portrait session to document the child's relationship to their favorite people.
